24 – So Long Seamus

Seamus here: This is a bummer of an episode. I have to tap out of the podcast game. I took on a new position at my company that is a great opportunity, but it came with a schedule change that just isn’t going to allow me to record with Troy anymore. Troy and I talked about it, and I’m excited to know that he wants to keep the show going. I really think that parenting from the perspective of dads is an important topic that isn’t talked about enough. It is not to suggest that moms aren’t equally (or more!) important – we just can’t ignore the dad factor.

Podcasting is a bit of project. Especially when you factor in doing any amount of social media and web presence. And we didn’t do it alone. I asked a lot of questions of some of the parenting social media accounts I was following, as well as had some regular interactions with others. I really appreciate y’all helping us get started and staying engaged throughout. Here’s a few of the Instagram accounts that either helped, or interacted, or were just fun:

I know there are more, but these are the ones that stick out who either helped us get started on the social side and/or helped us keep going. And they’re funny!

I do have to make a shout out to my parents too. Aside from showing me how to be a good parent from day one and all that stuff, they are loyal listeners. I could record a whole episode of myself running the garbage disposal, and my mom would tell me that she could tell I did a great job disposing the heck out of some garbage. And podcasts aren’t really my dad’s thing, but he listened to this one. Which I appreciate. Even if it was on 2x while he was driving the tractor!

I’ll still be listening to the show and I hope y’all will too. I will also try to record with Troy once in a while too. I also have a special episode I want to record with my wife some day. So stay on the lookout. Thanks for the support!

23 – Kids and Pets

According the the American Pet Products Association, 84.6 million homes, or 68% of all households in the U.S. have pets. Troy and Seamus have been part of that statistic. Listen to this episode to learn about how they have blended pet parenting with kid parenting. Parenting can be challenging enough – adding a dog in the mix can make it that much more of a project.

19 – Smoke & Mirrors – Christmas Edition

As much fun as the Christmas season can be, it is also loaded with trickery and fibs. Why not use those tricks and fibs to gain some compliance with our kids? Troy and Seamus share some of the things we do that keep our kids in line during the holidays. But not all of them are just to get them to behave. Some are for the spirit of the time of year, to step up the fun a little.

Fun story about this episode: We recorded it about a year ago, so we’ve had it on standby for a while. Seamus handles the website and when he tried to upload the first episode, he accidentally put this one up first.  So if anyone was very quick to listen, this episode was up for about three hours back in March.

Seamus here with a bonus smoke and mirrors trick: We recently caught one of our kids in a lie. Without getting into the details, she really leaned into it. She was super committed to the lie. So Mary reminded her about the “Santa Cam” and asked what Santa would say if we were to call him. She did NOT want us to call Santa and finally came out with the real story.

12 – Picking a Car

Think back to when you bought your first car. Then think back to when you bought your first car as an adult, making real money, but didn’t have kids. NOW – think about the first time you had to buy a car with a kid (or 2+) as a factor. Total game changer right? Troy and Seamus have both had to buy cars with kids in mind. From buying a car while pregnant with the first kid, to replacing a bad choice of a car, to how your family activities play into that decision.

6 – Kids Fly Free?

We’re about knees deep in summer time right now. If you are traveling farther than you can drive in a day, maybe two, you are going to have to face flying with kids. Troy has quite a bit of experience flying with his sons, and Seamus has some experience flying with his oldest daughter (he hasn’t braved both girls yet, but will a couple weeks after this episode). With several combined flights with children, Troy and Seamus have some lessons learned to share.

5 – Picking a House

Buying a house is big. Big investment. Big decision. Big commitment. Big expense. That statement is true no matter who you are and what your family situation looks like. Having kids adds a few degrees of complication to the home buying equation. Seamus offers some tips on what to look for in a house based on all the mistakes he made in picking his first home about 6 months before his first kid was born. Troy, on the other hand, will share his perspective based on not only his own home buying experience, but also his expertise as a residential real estate agent.

4 – Smoke & Mirrors – Food Edition

This is the first installation of a series Troy and Seamus want to do called Smoke and Mirrors. Occasionally we will discuss ways we trick the kids into compliance through various acts of smoke and mirrors. As any parent knows, it is sometimes more about presentation and mindset than anything else. In this edition, we are talking about food. We share some of the tricks we use to get our kids to eat certain tough food and drink.

What are some of your tricks to get your kids to eat what is put in front of them? Can you pass a bratwurst off as a hot dog? Share below in the comments.

And for any brave souls who want to try the Peanut Butter Soup recipe, Seamus’ mom sent it to me. You can get the cookbook here. In fairness to Mable Hoffman, Momma Nelson made some great meals out of this book. The PBS just wasn’t one of them.

3 – Expectant Dad, an interview with Allen Wallace

This is a fun episode – it is the first time we’ve interviewed a guest for the show. Allen Wallace is an officer with the U.S. Army and he and his wife are expecting a baby. In this conversation, we talk about his experience so far in his wife’s pregnancy. You’ll get to hear him talk about how he found out they were expecting, how he navigates a pregnant woman, learning the sex of the baby and how to announce it, a unique use for toilet paper, cravings, the list goes on.

Because we know y’all are wondering, Allen and Josie announced they are expecting a baby girl at their wedding.

*production note* We learned several things about recording three people at the same time. We ran into some microphone SNAFU. The audio isn’t perfect, but you can hear Allen very clearly, which is the importnat part.

2 – Dadding From a Distance

Seamus here: Troy and I have both had to spend time away from family. Troy travels on a regular basis for his work as a Realtor, but also for volunteer work with his Fraternity. I also travel frequently, mostly for my work as a Navy Reservist. In this episode, we talk about the similarities and differences between our experience in dadding from a distance. These will range from a long weekend to a 13-month deployment. Even an over nighter can present its challenges.

As promised: Here’s a link to that bottle sterilizer we mentioned, Dr. Brown’s makes some fancier ones if you’re feeling inspired to spend more money, but this one has worked like a champ*.

*It does not work like a champ if you don’t follow directions. This sterilizer uses the microwave – you’re only supposed to nuke it for 5 minutes. I accidentally hit an extra 0 and walked away, so I cooked these bad boys in the microwave for 50 minutes. That’s what I was talking about when I said I wrecked $50 worth of bottles and equipment. Pictures below.

This is what it looks like when you microwave it for 10x the prescribed amount of time.

1 – The Birth of a Podcast

This is the first full episode we are releasing, which we are considering the birth of a podcast. We are very proud of our baby and, like most parents, think it is far more beautiful than it probably actually is. In this episode, Troy and I talk about the childbirth experience from our perspective as Dads. WAY different than a mom’s perspective.   Please be sure to subscribe to our podcast so we think you think its beautiful too. We have more episodes to come!
